Outfit Post: My Dream Skirt

I bough this little beauty from Camden Passage Antique market  in Islington
last year just after I moved to London, and has since become one of my
spring/summer wardrobe staples. It is early 1950s and hand embroidered
with the sweetest little farm work scenes. Unfortunately I have no idea
where it was made, but it has a certain eastern European feel about it.

I absolutely love Basket bags. Something about them just says sunshine!

This blouse is a 1950s men's cotton shirt that my boyfriend bought for 50p
at a market for himself, but as it was to small I got to keep it. I love the
red gingham print, and the fact that its far to big means I get to
experience the cool spring breeze!

And this is how I wore it all! I hope you are all looking forward
to summer as much as I am, even if your not getting a sneak peak
of the spring sunshine like us lucky folks in London!

Vintage Post Cards

I found these beauties in an Oxfam bookshop, nestled amongst a huge collection of
postcards someone had donated and just had to share them with you. I see re-prints
of 40s postcards like  these all the time but I am over the moon to have found some
originals, not only are they  great hairstyle  inspiration, the kittens and puppies are
just so gosh darn cute! I'm one of those irritating people who can't stroll past a dog
 without having to pet it.

Easy 1940s working girl hairstyle tutorial

Hello followers! It is overdue that I share with you how to do this style, I've been asked many times and have promised without result. Finally I have put together a tutorial of words and images as I'm too scared to video myself! This style is extremely simple and can be worn daily or in the evening with a cute hair clip. I've seen this style varied in many 40s photos, I don't know if the technique was the same; but the look is just as authentic.

Firstly you will need bobby pins, a tail comb, hairspray ('SILVIKRIN'!!!) and one of these bad boys.....

A 'Roly poly' in your hair colour. I found mine in 'Boots'.

Part hair neatly on the side and hairspray the parting, a neat parting is the trick of a vintage hairstyle. Part a large section of the front of your hair for the front roll, I normally part till just after my ear as shown in the picture. Backcomb this part of your hair a little so it stays firm and tidy. Curve the hair around your spare hand, it is important to get the motion shown in the photograph. Curve the hair until you can pin it so the loose hair sits underneath the roll.

Pin the roll inside and underneath the roll and neaten up as you see fit!

Hold the Roly Poly across the lower back of your hair and pin over down hair. Then wrap the hair below round the roly poly and pin into place. Make sure the sides of the roly poly are pinned down well.

When your back roll is neat, pin bobby pins behind your ears to keep the style neat and hairspray like there's no tomorrow! I can't recommend Wella's 'Silvikrin' more, it's the best hairspray for old fashioned styles. No hairstyle cannot be achieved with 'Silvikrin'!

Now treat yourself to a good ol' fashioned cuppa tea!

Springing Into Action!

So it looks like Spring is well and truly on its way, so to celebrate...
We went shopping!

Aimee - Here is a late 40's crepe dress I bought from a stall on
Portabello. I decided that I should vary my colours, so here is one of the
first baby blue things I have! I really like baby blue with red! I have
rollered hair with a 40s marcel wave. I'm thinking of doing a tutorial on
this hmmmm....My dress is accessorised with a ribbon belt and little
bakelite buckle from Harriett's collection. In my hair are sweet silk 40's
flowers, also borrowed from Harriett.

Harriett - I bought this early 40s cotton frock from Portobello from a
nearby stall for £30, due to a few holes it had in the side seam. A needle
and thread later though and it was ready to wear for a night out on the
tiles! I have been looking for a day dress for a while and I fell in love with
its bold print, white collar and bakelite buttons. My bag and shoes are
from charity shops, and the silk flowers from my collection! You may
also notice I cut myself a fringe, more photos to come I promise, as
well as a few tutorials on vintage 'do's' with bangs!

Harriet - We also bought matching bakelite bangles! We have been lusting after all things
bakelite for quite a few months now and are very proud to have our own set, heres a fun
game try and guess who's hand is who's? I leave you with a sneaky glimpse of one of
our moves that we have picked up from our recent swing classes!

Just a short little post as I've been so busy this week! I have some very
exciting 'thifting' news to bring to you tomorrow, but until then heres
a few hair style pictures. This is how I am wearing my hair today, two
front victory rolls with a row of pink silk flowers pinned behind them.
A lot of people think that the centre part with rolls is quite a severe
look, but I'm actually really pleased with the outcome. I've been trying
to experiment with new looks every day and this is one I will defiantly
recreate, now I'm off to see what the general public of my north London
suburb make of it! How have you been wearing your hair lately?
